Work and play back in Port Douglas

So have now got back into the swing of housekeeping again – it’s now something I know in my sleep! It is nice to be earning some money again, and it is not as busy as my last stint at Sea Temple, so going well I feel. I have also spent time with everyone in the house again, went to a pub quiz (we came second!), ice cream evening with Paul and Ellie and a relaxing afternoon by the pool at the Sheraton with Jason. We also managed a house night out with dinner (Mexican!! yum) and drinks which was lovely and does not happen often enough! (more…)

Mackay BP Truckstop

First solo blog post!

Firstly I apologise for the very (very) late blog post, I have been quite busy and its actually hard to write one of these yourself if its not habit!

I just spent some time in Canberra being with my family, where I soon found I was at the point of needing an income or I wouldn’t be able to last out here much longer! Thankfully after speaking to my old boss at Sea Temple I had my job back and was given a start date. My next dilemma was making sure I could get from Canberra all the way back up to Port Douglas, this time on my own! I had to get a few bits replaced on the car first which was frustrating as I was hoping to not have to spend anything on the car, however with the car running well enough to get up to Port Douglas I then had to plan my route up. Melbourne for The Aussie Open

Having opted for an Airbnb stay in Melbourne, our lovely host checked us in and made sure we were comfortable before leaving us to unpack. We decided to make the most of being in the same place for two weeks by completely unpacking our bags, rather then living with the tangle of clothes within. After all the hard work unpacking we rewarded ourselves with an ice cream from Messimo’s, probably the best ice cream we have ever had. We made a note to return several times over the coming weeks. 3 States, 2 weeks, 1 car

We started our trip towards Melbourne by detouring back to Canberra, to collect Pete’s new phone which had not arrived in time for Christmas, as he had obviously fallen short of making it on the nice list. This meant that much to my Gramps’ surprise, we popped in to visit him and Granny for a quick drink, before heading slightly north so we could easily get back into the city the next day to pick up the phone. Canberra Christmas

On the morning we were due to head down from the Blue Mountains and into Canberra our car battery decided not to start but luckily a good Samaritan was able to give us the jump start which go us on the road. We arrived in Canberra for our Christmas stay with Nicola’s relatives, Erica, Reg and Icon the dog without a hitch and spent our first evening meeting/catching up with Erica and Reg.

The Three Sisters

Speed Cameras, Lighthouses and Mountains

So we’ve finally returned to New South Wales. Our first trip into the state was a quick jaunt down from Brisbane to Byron Bay; this time we’ll get to spend a little more time here. On our first trip Nicola managed to get herself breathalised, however this season’s trend for the police is speeding. It seemed every 100km we’d pass a Police Officer with a speedgun intent on jumping in his car for a race. We had to really push the throttle to prevent them to catching up with us as we headed South.

East Coast Madness

So we’ve finally started to make our way down the east coast from Port Douglas after a rather sad farewell to the place and people we have completely fallen in love with. We had a lot of emotional goodbyes as we were not only leaving Nicola’s family, who also took me in as their own, but all the people we had met and befriended in Port Douglas. My Bally Hooley family were also hard to leave and it was difficult swinging by the depot on the way out of town to say goodbye to Peter who’d taken the role as my Port Douglas Grandad whilst I was in the area!
